Illinois uses Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE) to raise the gross-income limit from the federal default of 130% of the Federal Poverty Level to 165%. The monthly limits below are the maximum gross income a household of each size can earn and still pass the gross-income test.

Work requirements

ABAWD work requirement in Illinois

Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) aged 18 through 64 must work at least 80 hours per month, participate in qualifying training, or live in a county with an active waiver — or they lose SNAP after 3 months in any 36-month window. The age ceiling rose from 54 to 64 under the 2026 rules.

  1. Create an account at abe.illinois.gov (or sign in if you already have one).
  2. Start a new application and choose SNAP / food assistance.
  3. Enter your household — who lives with you, your income, and your expenses (rent, utilities, child care, medical).
  4. Submit, then upload your documents (ID, proof of income, residency) directly in ABE (Application for Benefits Eligibility).
  5. Complete the interview — usually a phone call within a week or two; watch for it so your case is not delayed.
  6. Track your status, messages, and EBT balance by signing back into ABE (Application for Benefits Eligibility).
